MoreA death in West Virginia draws FBI agent Ellie Gardner into an international chase across Europe in order to prevent the murder of millions of innocent people. Ellie's job first leads her to an obscure death in the hills of West Virginia, where a close encounter with radioactive material points her toward New York City. There, it turns out, NYPD Counterterrorism unit lieutenant Michael Stewart has his own murder to solve. Their two victims seem, at first, to have no connection, and when Ellie stumbles on their bond it still does nothing to explain why each man died of radiation poisoning. Investigating the local man's background leads to an attack by a hooded stranger in which Ellie is wounded. The agents know that they are on to something that cannot be explained by coincidence, but terrorism in the country has stepped up and neither Ellie nor Michael can get their superiors to provide the manpower they need. On their own the pair trace a wayward shipping container to France and locate its originator--with fatal results. They use his information to continue across Europe to Prague, retracing the steps of a mysterious man with his own very specific agenda. They don't know it yet, but they are criss-crossing paths with Lewis Sykora, mild-mannered water system engineer turned international treasure hunter in order to save his young, dying son. Lewis has heard a tragic but incredible story from his elderly father and is just desperate enough to act on it. Also in the mix is Ahmed Zainudin, a transplanted Middle Eastern jihadist with his own definition of victory. The counterterrorism agents follow the trail to the outskirts of Prague where, in the silent, heavily wooded hills, they meet up with their Czech police liaison and explore the sprawling mine-slash-underground munitions factory, one of Hitler's best-kept secrets. It had been manned with slave labor from the nearby work camp Terrezin, and now has been long since abandoned and deteriorating until disaster is evitable. An unexpected event throws them into the center of the crown jewel of Czech history, the largest ancient castle in the world where the seat of their government still resides. With their Czech guide Michael and Ellie discover little-known aspects and areas of Czechoslovakia during the Second World War as well as the twenty-three year occupation by the Soviets--as well as what, exactly, they are now pursuing, and how terrifying its consequences will be. At the castle Ellie catches sight of their quarry, but the nuclear material gets smuggled out of the republic.Ellie and Michael pursue it to the port of Bordeaux, France, just one step behind Lewis and his allies. A frantic search of the vast port ensues and they catch one of the co-conspirators, but in their haste to escape a vital clue has been left behind, and finally Ellie and Michael have a glimpse of the thieves' final goal. But can they catch up to the stolen nukes in time to stop the slaughter of most of the populace of New York City?
