MoreWhen a mysterious cave is found by ten year old Michael and his cousin Emma they are excited. But the cave is not an ordinary cave and the hidden secrets inside the cave are more than they bargained for.
Michael and Emma soon find themselves involved in a dangerous series of events. Events that cause them to join forces with the hidden cave dwellers in order to rescue a small boy with a huge secret.
"Do not be afraid. Caden grabbed tighter onto Amintas fur as they sailed through the midnight sky of a thousand stars. Do not be afraid. He closed his eyes and whispered the words again as he buried his face into the warm and heavily furred, ruff of the dogs neck.
It wasnt working.
He was afraid. "
This book is for middle school kids ages 8 to 10 who like a mixture of magic, fantasy and fun.
This first book introduces Michael. A young boy who craves lots of adventure and excitement. If he cant find it he makes it up. His parents are a bit concerned that his tendency to act before thinking is going to land him in more trouble than he can handle. Michael figures it is probably best not to let them know all the details of a few things. Why worry them?
Emma is Michaels cousin. In former years she was quite as ready for adventure and fun as Michael. This year though she is concerned about her parents who have disappeared while on a magazine assignment. They have been gone for long periods before but never this long. And never without letting Emma know where they are. Has something happened to them? She is spending the summer like she always does with Michael and her Aunt and Uncle. They tell her everything is fine. But the longer her parents are away the more worried she gets.
Then there is Caden. The story opens up with this small boy who is flying through the night sky with a giant dog. The dogs name is Aminta which means "protector." Caden was definitely in need of that protection the night two kidnappers grabbed him and took him away. Although Caden has never met Michael or Emma before, it seems that Aminta has. She thinks they are the perfect pair to help Caden get safely home.
Woven between the fantasy and action of the story is a book that encourages trust and faith in oneself and others. Both Michael and Emma realize by the end of the book that working things out on their own is not always the best thing to do. Some secrets are too dangerous to keep away from parents and family. Michael and Emma eventually find out that their love for excitement and adventure is a family trait. And once the whole family is involved things get even more exciting!
And finally, just to make reading not only fun but provide a little geographical education as well the book explores the natural beauty and mystery of the Oregon coast.
