The Constraint Planning package provides planning functionality that takes into
account capacity and material constraints. A planning method in which the
production capacity of work centers is considered as a constraint is called
"finite". A planning method is called "infinite", if the production capacity is
assumed to be unlimited.
The Constraint Planning package currently provides Master Production Scheduling
(MPS) functionality with both finite and infinite planning methods, which can be
used in an integrated manner. Master Production Scheduling plays a key role in
the MRP II concept for the logistic planning and control of internal and
external flows of goods in an industrial company. Constraint Planning makes it
possible to choose different planning strategies for different parts of your
production system.
Master Production Scheduling with constraint planning has the following main
objectives:
o optimization of constraint resources from a costs and cash flows, customer
service and inventory point of view,
o coordination between sales and production,
o coordination of availability of material and capacity,
o "driver" of the flow of goods, or "input" to the material requirements
planning (MRP I)
In addition, Constraint Planning is relevant to a multi-site planning concept,
in which the goods flow coordination for several local sites takes place at a
central planning level.
