MoreOne of the chief attractions of the study of history is the fact that the subject deals with vital and progressive issues. In order that it may keep abreast of the times, therefore, a text-book must occasionally be overhauled and supplemented in the data which relate to recent events. In pursuance of this object, I have taken the opportunity to examine critically each statement made throughout the book, and to make revisions wherever desirable. Several recent works of scholarly import have proved valuable aids, especially Pratt sH istory of Music, Baltzell sD ictionary of Musicians, and the new edition of Grove sD ictionary of Music and Musicians. Chapter XI, which deals with the most modem developments, has been entirely rewritten. Two features have been added which should greatly increase the efficiency of the book, a list of illustrative material to accompany the text, and several maps which display the fields of activity of the great musicians. I wish to express my appreciation of the cordial reception given theO utlines by brother musicians, educational institutions and the music-loving public. The increasing demand for books about music is a significant indication of the progress of the art in this country. CLARENCE G. HAMILTON. Wellesley, Mass., July,
