MoreKq the tens on the fingers were processes used by isfJK primitive peoples. From the ten fingers arose 40 -ultimately the dedmal system of nimieration. Recording the results of counting was done by theE gyptians and other ancient nations by means of strokes and hooks; for one thing agle stroke I was made, for two things two strokes 11 were used, and so on up to ten which was rqjresented by O. Then eleven was written I fl, twelve 11 n, and so on up to twenty, or two tens, which was represented by nn. In this way the numeration proceeded up to a hundred, for which another symbol was employed. Names for II, III, Mil, Hfl, etc., appear in theE gyptian hieroglyphics, but a q)ecial symbol for each name is not used. Probably the Hindoos first invented such symbols, and passed them on to the A rabs, through whom they were introduced into Europe. 2GREEK ROTATION The Greeks used an awkward notation for recording the results of counting.
