From My Sister's Luck:
My parents were asleep when my sister came home drunk. Again. They always are. I mean, she never gets caught, ever. It's the weirdest thing. She can get away with practically anything. Coming to school hungover? Check. Making out with a guy in the backseat of her car in our freaking driveway? Twice, at least. It wouldn't bother me so much if she wasn't such a jerk on top of it, though. I guess when you're pretty and popular and just plain lucky all the time, you feel like you get to act that way. I wouldn't know. My luck is so bad I should be walking around with one of those giant sandwich boards. It would say, "Danger: natural disaster in progress! Take Cover!" Seriously. If there's something to trip over, I fall flat on my face. If I'm running late, I hit all the red lights. If there's a cute guy within fifty feet of me, I have spinach in my teeth and toilet paper on my shoe. It never fails. So, anyway, my sister was puking in her bathroom, on account of the typical-Saturday-night-public-drunkeness I mentioned earlier, and I was looking out the window, because I couldn't sleep due to the sheer volume of the blowage of her chunks. It was a sucky night all around. Kim had been to some other great party. Had I gone? I had not. Why? Because I got grounded for dinging my parents' car. Again. Kim's car--a present for her always-perfect grades, was sitting at the end of the driveway. I have no car of my own. I am a menace, you see. And then, as I stared at nothing in particular, a shadow approached Kim's perfect blue convertible. I strained to see in the dark. A raccoon? A coyote? No, it was too big. A bear? None of the above. It was a man.
