Surely the crunching sound behind me couldn't be echoes of my own footsteps. I took a quick look behind. But there was nothing there. It was only the echoes of the surrounding hills, I tried to convince myself. Just as, inside, it had been the walls, floors and ceilings. I went on running. Right ahead of me I saw Raoul's car. And still I heard those footsteps. I couldn't be imagining it, I now told myself. The sound was far more real than the echoes in the house had been. I took another quick look. And my heart did a double leap, for there was indeed someone there--a black figure running furiously along the drive down the side of the house. Even as I looked, the figure burst into the sunshine--the very essence of what I had imagined crouching behind the kitchen door--my nightmare transformed into reality. As if it isn't enough to wake up in unfamiliar surroundings, being cared for by a man named Raoul who must be her husband but seems even more alien than the face staring at her from the mirror, the narrator of this fast-paced romantic suspense discovers there is something--and someone--in her past too terrifying to remember. But the one from her past will force her to remember. And the present will become even more terrifying than the past.
