MoreFour-year-old Shari Ward saw life and death as a simple process. She explained it to her father as they watched a snake shed its skin. "Oh, I get it," she said. "It's like when people die."
"What do you mean, honey? her puzzled father asked.
"When you die," she explained, with an air of authority, "you get rid of your old skin then come back to life all over again. You're brand new--just like the snake."
"Why do you say that, sweetheart?"
"That's what I did, and my other mommy did, too."
Throughout Shari's lifetime she has experienced dreams and remembered happenings, often under hypnosis, from what she believes to be her past lives. These served to reinforce her childhood belief--or was it really a memory?
Beyond Forever is not a biography. It is a novel, but much of the novel is based on true memories and dreams that cannot be easily explained away. Its main purpose is to entertain, and to some extent inform the reader and to make some readers ask, "Have I ever lived before?"
Shari's involvement with a cult--in an ashram setting--is a fictionalized version of a true experience, the culmination of which shows what can happen in somewhat similar situations. Her dreams and psychic experiences are real as is the near-death experience of her husband. An interesting aspect of her hypnotic exploration of her past lives is the co-regression experience with her husband which is not frequently used by therapists or described in professional writings.
The sub-plot of the budding romance between the psychologists working with Shari serves to keep the reader grounded in present-day reality while allowing the mind to explore the possiblity of having llived before through hypnotic age regression and dream therapy.
