The Heart of the Matter (1948) is a novel by British author Graham Greene and won that year's James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. During World War II, Greene worked for the Secret Intelligence Service in Sierra Leone, which became the setting for the novel.
Time Magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
