Grandma Dragon
By Thais Linhares – translated into English by the author.
For Grandma Mary .
This story starts with a hunt.
And do you know what was being hunted?
A Princess. A little princess with long perfumed braids.
The poor little girl ran sewing her way between the trees of the forest. She was exhausted and could no longer run and it seemed as if her legs were made of pudding so tired they were.
– Please, little princess, we want to rest" begged her little legs.
– I cannot stop! She'll catch me! We're almost there... tweedle, lee,deedle..!
The princess sang, puffing away, trying to gain strength with the music.
But where was she going so hurriedly?
She was going to a secret place, hidden among the trees. It was a dark cave...
She entered the cave frantically, loosening a cloud of small bats on her head, more frightened of the princess than she of them.
In the darkness, it was necessary to walk with greater care and she edged forward, step by step, into the darkness. "Hello, Grandma"– she murmured, and the darkness replied:
– Hi!
– My I hide in there?
– Certainly my little princess.
And immediately a faint light from an old bedside lamp shone, showing the princess an enormous bed covered with feather quilts and filling these covers was a large, green and puffy dragon.
The dragon held an open book and gestured to the little princess to make herself comfortable beside it.
Immediately, she got under all the covers, leaving only her eyes and the point of her little nose showing, and with a sweet girly voice, said:
– Tell me a little bedtime story, Grandma?
Grandma Dragon told a story which made the princess get very small, the size of a thumb and she had to grab hold of the pillow so as not to disappear among the sheets!
– Scrumptious this story, Grandma! Tell me another!
The next story turned her into a very selfish giant, making the bed shake and almost breaking it – more because of the giant's terrible temper than of his weight.
And there followed more stories...
