Author Linda Causton, unable to sleep one night, turned on the TV. There, at 2:30 in the morning, was Jason Davis telling the true story of the Rainy Lake Pony in a segment of "5 On the Road with Jason Davis" (KSTP-TV, Minneapolis, Minnesota). A horse had managed to survive, without help from others, for many years on several small, isolated islands in Rainy Lake, located in northern Minnesota.

How could this possibly have happened, with little to no food during the brutally cold winters? Linda was so moved by this real-life drama that she sat down and wrote Lester's Rainy Lake Pony. She sent her story, along with her illustrations, to Jason Davis, who decided to do another "5 On the Road with Jason Davis" segment with Ms. Causton on her "story about a story."

Lester's Rainy Lake Pony is the touching tale of how Lester, the "Guardian Angel in the Service of All God's Creatures Great and Small," and a rather small and rumpled pony, find strength and friendship in the midst of life's bumps, bruises, and scary times. It reminds us, young and old, that we can be a gift and a miracle to others in simple, surprising ways.
