Today's advanced farming methods produce high yields but demand much of the environment. Wildlife habitats such as wetlands, heathlands, unimproved meadows and ancient woodlands are rapidly vanishing, while pollution from pesticides, herbicides and manure is an ever-increasing problem. Early chapters in this book examine the conflict of interests between producing food for all and preserving precious wildlife habitats. Further chapters examine the inter-relationship between agriculture, soil erosion, droughts and irrigation, including the example of the American Dustbowl of the 1930s. Finally, the author examines how modern farming techniques affect livestock and - ultimately - the people who consume them. He discusses the controversial use of hormones and antibiotics on cattle and chickens, as well as the increasing tendency for livestock to become immune to vaccines. The growing trend towards organic farming is examined here. In conclusion the author points to the need to achieve a balance between feeding an ever-increasing global population and protecting our vulnerable natural environment. A list of useful addresses of environmental organizations is also included. Mark Lambert holds a science degree from London University. He has written a number of other titles for Wayland, including "The Future for the Environment", and "Focus on Radioactivity".
