The emphasis is on having fun and gaining first-hand experience through play. Teachers will find that the activities are in line with Early Learning goals and offer a source of ideas for parents to try at home. The book also contains activity sheets, which are intended as practical starting points, rather than "worksheets". Some of the areas covered are: numeral recognition and counting activities; games, stories, songs and rhymes, reinforcing new skills; "everyday" skills - using numbers around the environment and in the home; ideas for developing mathematical language, problem solving and estimating skills.
