Christmas is almost here and Billy is stuck in a boy's home while his mother is in prison. If not for an older boy named Stefan, it would have been intolerable. What Billy really wants, and prays for, is a friend. To his surprise the answer comes through a calico cat named Amico. Through Amico, Billy meets an old Italian man named Lazzarro, and then finds out that Joe, the boy that gave him a black eye, is Lazzarro's grandson. Billy and Joe become best of friends, anyway, doing everything together. Even when his mom gets out of prison and Billy goes home, Stefan and Joe remain his friends, but circumstances threaten to separate them forever. There has to be a solution and fast. Soon, their lives become woven together in a way Billy never could have imagined.
