Will Dawson, twelve, is on a trout-fishing trip with his father, and this year, his father allows him more freedom, more space, in the woods. They separate-Mr. Dawson going on upstream. As he casts into a good run, Will freezes as his father's hat comes shooting past him in the rapids. Terrified that his father has been seriously injured or worse, Will starts on a desperate search for him upriver. Behind Will, a black bear also sees the hat and starts upriver. Encounters with human beings have always meant food. Eagerly, he presses on. Will is caught between two dilemmas, one ahead of him and the other behind. Calling on all the outdoor skills and knowledge his father has instilled in him, he must deal with both situations: his father's need for help and the bear's increasingly aggressive behavior. The creature is relentless, but so is Will.
