This resource sets out to offer a unique, flexible approach to teaching literature to young adults. It includes strategies that can be used with minimal supervision in small groups, with individuals, and with an entire class to guide learners (grades 6-12) in the study of novels. Capitalising on young people's interest in themselves and others, the techniques provide students with new ways to think about stories. They also serve as excellent springboards for discussion. Covey's focus is on the interaction between fiction and reality - novels are seen as microcosms of the world. Students examine literature through characters, relations, events and issues using tools such as character checklists, character development charts, circles of trouble, comfort diagrams, sociograms, story webs, plot graphs and a five senses box. With this approach, students not only build their understanding and appreciation of literature, they also build self-awareness and understanding of others. The book is divided into three sections. The first, "Characters and Personalities", introduces students to personality types and differences. "The Facts, Please" and "Reading Between the Lines" offer specific strategies students can use with any novel in a variety of ways - as a focus for discussions, as mini-lessons in individual reading programmes and as preparatory guidelines for reading, to name a few.
