For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day. Here we have the reason for the command; in remembrance of the Creation, a period of Divine rest after Divine activity. Wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day and hallowed it. God blessed it, by making it a blessing to those who kept it, and hallowed it, or set it apart as a day to be kept holy. Why and how the Sabbath was kept by the Jews. Counting the one given in the commandment, there are four reasons mentioned in the Bible why the Sabbath should be kept--1. In continual remembrance of the Creation. 2. To give a regular time for rest to those who had to labour i.e. as a humane provision. XXXII SCRIPTURE PROOFS AND NOTES. T. See the words of the commandment, Exod. xx. 11, 2. The Sabbath was reckoned to last from the sunset of (Friday) the sixth day, to the sunset of (Saturday) the seventh day. All bodily labour, except the work of necessity, piety, and charity, was forbidden. The day was kept as a day for rest, for rejoicing, for devotion, and for the public worship of God. Wilful breaking of the Sabbath was punished with stoning. When we come to the New Testament we find great stress laid on keeping the Sabbath, so much so that the Pharisees had even invented many ridiculous prohibitions in connection with it.
