Reggie Elder had been living an ordinary life in the year of 1947 when things took an upside-down turn. With his father gone and his mother missing, Reggie finds himself living at Aunt Purdy's boarding house, with its odd assembly of boarders. When Reggie becomes the target of the school's bully, Reggie and new chums, Sinclair and Eddy, find refuge in their tree house. Contacted by space aliens on their ham radio, the boys soon experience exciting adventures in space despite warnings from their woodland friends of the aliens' dire schemes. Suspicions mount when they discover Mr. Sly, the magician, and Miss Spellbinder, the librarian, assisting the aliens in some bizarre plot. The wise owl, Robb Roy MacTavish, advises the boys to "Dig down deep and find the good source within ya, laddies, and you'll be up to any task."
