Tommy lives with his great aunt and uncle on a farm in southern Missouri. His mother is in the hospital with a very serious illness, and his father is serving in the United States Army, as the country is involved in World War II. Because he fears Uncle Walter has bad intentions toward his pet duck, Humphrey, and Elmo, his pet rabbit, he takes the two animals and runs away. His plan is to catch the train in the nearest town and go live with the family who is renting his family's farm in northern Missouri. Little does he imagine what is in store when the train he boards takes him far from the place he intends to go. All who travel with Tommy will experience the value of family and friendship.
