In Castle Pines, my novel for readers twelve and up, Tommy faces frustration, grief and anger as he struggles to cope with his grandfather's illness. On his fourteenth birthday Tommy Maldonado discovers that his grandfather has Alzheimer's disease. Will Grandpa now be sent to Castle Pines just as Grandma was? Alzheimer's disease is very dear to my heart. It is beyond belief to watch a person who was once so intellectual and articulate struggle to find simple words to express himself. It is disheartening and heartrending to see the pain and anguish endured by frustrated family members and their ailing loved ones. I have worked with Alzheimer's patients for many years and I am very familiar with the challenges facing anyone who, like Tommy, wonders how to cope with a love one with AD.
