Not illustrated. 1635 Excerpt: ...And even some of those Herbs /, which are not Esculent, are notwithstanding Poculent; As Hop's jB/oomei Sec. gtutre what Herbs are good for Drinke, besides the two aforenamed; For thatit may (perhaps) cafe the Charge of Brewing, ifthey make Beere to require Iesse Malt, or make it last longer. Parts fit for theNourifljment of Man, in plants, are, Seeds, Roots, and Fruits $Buzchefiy Seeds, and Roots. For Leaves, they give no Nourishment, ment, at al 1, or very little: No more doe Flowers, or Blofjomt s, or stalkes. The Reason is, for that roots, and seeds, and Fraits, (in as much as all Plant, consist of an Oj(y vc.d Watry substance commixed,) have more of theOy/j Substance And Leaves, Flewers,&.c. of the Watry. And secondly, they are more Conceded $ For the Root, which continueth ever in the E irth, is still ed by the Earth; A nd Fruits, and Grams, ( we see ) arehalfeayeare, ormoie, mCancocting; Whereas leaves are out, and perfect in a Moneth. Plants (for the most part )are more strong, both m Taste, and Smell, in the Seed, than in the Lease, and The Cause is, for that in Plants, that are not of a fierce and Eager spirit, the Vertue is increased by concoction, and M turation,whch is evrr most in the Seed j But in Plants, that are ot a Fierce and Eager Spirit, they are stronger whilest the spirit is enclosed in the Root j And the spirits doe but weak, n,and dissipate, when they come to the Aire,nnd Sunne As we see it in onions, Garlicne., Dragon, &c. Nay there be Plants, that have their Roots very H ot, and Anmaticali And their Seeds rather mjipide; As C inger.
