MoreLocal author K. S. Robeson has another winner with Book Two of her new series, Tales from Wind Creek. CHLOE AND BIA (Falcor Books, 2003) takes off where A HOME FOR CHLOE (Falcor Books, 2002) left off. Just as Chloe is settling in with her new family in the stone house on Wind Creek, the Animal Alliance of the Big Woods faces a serious threat. The Big Woods is up for sale and the city plans to destroy the home of the Animal Alliance in order to build a new City Hall and Library. Bia, Chloe, and their family desperately attempt to stop the development. They convince the Mayor to postpone the construction pending a citywide vote, but the greedy contractor has other plans.
Book Two offers readers a full introduction to the Tompkins family - a family that has the mysterious Cherokee gift of being able to understand animals. Like Book One, CHLOE AND BIA is a story of friendship and family, bravery and perseverance, and the sometimes unexpected price of progress.
Unlike some other children's books with Native American themes, this series is set fully in the 21st century. Cherokee history and culture are woven into the story line through Bia and her Cherokee grandmothers who play active roles. Books Three and Four: CHLOE, BIA, AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE, and CHLOE, BIA, AND THE CHEROKEE CRYSTAL, are set for publication in 2003.
For readers ages 8 to 12 and grades 4 to 6.
From Chapter 1
Bert Tompkins slowed as he drove down the main road that split the Big Woods into two parts. A large FOR SALE sign was posted on the left hand side. Tacked over the words FOR SALE was a smaller sign that read UNDER CONTRACT. A few yards down the road was another large sign that read - Your Tax Dollars at Work: Proposed site of the new City Hall/Library Complex. Final Vote Tuesday, September 25th, at the City Council Meeting.
Bert frowned and shook his head. When did this happen? It seemed like the city planners were going to develop every square inch of land they could until the city became one big mass of concrete, buildings, and houses. Where would all the animals of the Big Woods go? He thought about his daughter, Bia, and her new cat, Chloe. Didn't Kate say something about the Animal Alliance of the Big Woods saving the little cat's life? His frown deepened as he picked up speed again, heading for home.
