Like other titles in the "Reputations" series, this book is divided into four sections: the reputation, the background, interpretations, conclusions, each of which includes a time chart, notes on contemporary figures of importance, a book list and an index. The author has written several previous books in the Batsford "World Wide" series, and "Past into Present" series, including "Warfare" and "Government".
