This story disproves the myths surrounding a school’s library and its librarian. Its exaggerations are comical, entertaining, and imaginative. After hearing about all the dreadfully terrible things one could see how a child’s discovery of a real library can be truly wonderful. If the book is read in a serious tone it can make it even more hilarious. The narrator seems like a sixth grader is trying to scare a group of first graders before their first trip to the library. The illustrations were created with pen and watercolors. The shaky quality of the pictures creates the feeling of uncertainty and apprehension. The characters are very detailed, especially the librarian with her hairy legs, claw-like nails, and razor sharp teeth. The laminated children even have a little shine to them. There are small monster-like creatures throughout the book until the discovery of the real library and then they are sweet, little birds. The library is depicted more like a dungeon for most of the book with slime and real fire torches on the wall.
