The authors show how our basic understanding of what is going on around us is affected by previous experiences, by our mood, what we expect to happen and by what we want to happen. When it comes to trying to remember information, perhaps for an exam or a test, many students ignore the basic rules about how our memory systems work. The chapter on memory considers the problems of forgetfulness and the sort of conditions that make recall more likely.
