Raven Publishing

Raven Publishing is the Home of "True Fiction" where engaging fictional characters face real-life dilemmas. It was registered as an official business name with the State of Montana in the fall of 2001 by author Janet Muirhead Hill. Raven published her first middle-grade novel, "Miranda and Starlight" in February, 2002, the first of the Miranda and Starlight Series. When a revised edition came out in 2004, "Miranda and Starlight" won the Notable award from Writer's Notes Magazine. The second book, "Starlight's Courage," (2002) was revised in 2007. "Starlight, Star Bright," and "Starlight's Shooting Star," the third and fourth of the series were released in 2003. The fourth book, "Starlight Shines for Miranda," was awarded Best Book, 2004, by USA Book News in the young adult category. The sixth and last book of the series, "Starlight Comes Home" (also 2004) was first-runner-up for young adult fiction in Writer's Notes Magazine's 2005 awards. In 2004, Raven Publishing incorporated, with Janet Hill as president, her husband, Stan Hill as VP and Tayla Andrews, treasurer. In 2005, it published its first book by an author other than the founder. "Fergus, the Soccer-Playing Colt," by Dan Peterson filled a demand from retailers looking for middle-grade books for boys. A finalist for ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award, and First Runner Up of the Eric Hoffer Award, Fergus continues to be popular with both boys and girls. Also in 2005, Raven Published its one and—so far—only book for adults, Jenkins Group and IndependentPublisher.com's IPPY award winner, "Absaroka: Where the Anquish of a Soldier Meets the Land of the Crow," by Joan Bochmann. 2006 saw the publication of Jan Walker's middle-grade/young adult novel, "An Inmate's Daughter," also a finalist for both ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award and USA Book News Best Books Award. Danny's Dragon, by Janet Muirhead HIll was published in 2006 in response to the anguish of children separated from parents by war. It was honored by ForeWord Magazine as a finalist for the Book of the Year Award and cited by reviewers as a book that should be in every school and library. "A Horse to Remember," by Juliana Hutchings was published in 2007, Written when Juliana was only fourteen and published when she was seventeen, A Horse to Remember still captures the hearts of horse lovers everywhere. Bronze medalist for the 2008 Moonbeam Children's Book Award, "An Orange Slipknot," by Jan Young was published in December 2007. It was also a finalist for the Book of the Year Award. Jan Young also wrote a comprehensive 100 page cross-curricular unit designed for classroom and home school instruction based on her book The Orange Slipknot, which, besides entertaining both boys with an exciting adventure and coming-of-age story, teaches the reader about the language, culture, and life of the modern cowboy in the Great-Basin Region of the United States. Two other cross-curricular units are available from Raven: one for "Miranda and Starlight," and one for "Starlight's Courage." In 2008, Janet Muirhead Hill wrote and Raven published "Kyleah's Tree," the first in a trilogy about orphaned twins, separated when they were just four years old. "Kyleah's Tree" is a finalist for USA Book News' Best Book Award. At Raven Publishing, our goal is to connect children and young adults, through engaging stories, with issues and solutions that are of personal concern to them.
