Though there are days I feel on the verge of being a dinosaur, I hope it doesn't mean I'm nearing extinction. I submitted my first manuscript to Harpers back in 1966 at the age of 16. They wisely declined the opportunity. A mere eleven years later I received my first acceptance. The publisher was Greenwillow, which is now part of HarperCollins. Since LIZARD'S SONG, I've had 39 more books accepted. I've also had the good fortune to be teamed with illustrators including Peter Sis, Thomas Allen, Donald Crews, Laura Dronzek, Nancy Tafuri, Aruego & Dewey, Deborah Zemke, and Mary Azarian.

College prepared me for work as a children's librarian. I haven't worked as a librarian since 1978, but schools and libraries continue to fill my life. My work with children and their writing has taken me to schools stretching from the Arctic Circle to Jakarta, and Kuwait to Japan. www.georgeshannon.org
