MoreYou may send us an email query first, but please make it clear in the subject line that you are submitting a book proposal, and please do not include any attachments. Because of the rise of junk mail and spam, any email from an unknown source with an attachment will be deleted immediately, and any email with subject lines that aren't clear, like "Hello" or "Question" will be ignored. Thank you for your consideration.
Before submitting a proposal, please check our contact page here to make sure you are directing your proposal to the right person. If you query one of us via e-mail and dont hear back from us within a month, please send a follow-up to make sure we actually received it. Weve had people call us a few months later wondering why we never answered them, when in fact the e-mail never got through to us.
Please do not submit your query to more than one person. If you have already submitted your proposal to one editor at ECW Press and were declined, please do not send it to another editor or it will be rejected immediately. If your proposal is sent to one editor but better suited to another, the manuscript will be given to the most appropriate editor in the house. If you are declined, consider yourself declined by ECW, and not just by one person.
Instead of a SASE, you may include an email address in your cover letter where we could email you a reply to your query.
Poetry: 10-15 pages, brief bio/publication history, cover letter explaining who you are, what your book is about, and why you think its a good fit with ECW, and SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope).
Fiction (short or long): 15-25 sample pages, double-spaced, synopsis, brief bio/publication history, cover letter explaining who you are, what your book is about, and why you think its a good fit with ECW, and SASE.
Literary Non-Fiction: 15-25 pages, double-spaced, chapter-by-chapter synopsis, brief bio/publication history, suggested marketing plan (i.e. who will buy your book), cover letter explaining who you are, what your book is about, and why you think its a good fit with ECW, and SASE.
Commercial Non-Fiction: 15-25 pages, double-spaced, synopsis, detailed table of contents, brief bio/publication history, suggested marketing plan, cover letter explaining who you are, what your book is about, and why you think its a good fit with ECW, and SASE.
Photo/art: describe what area(s) you specialize in, and include a few samples of your work (photocopies so we have a visual record on file). If you send us artwork that you wish returned, make sure to include a SASE with sufficient postage (for those outside Canada, include an International Reply Coupon). Since our projects vary in topic, we will keep you on file in case we publish something along the lines of your subject(s).
We do accept unsolicited manuscripts, but a familiarity with ECW titles published in the last five years never hurts and sometimes saves postage. Check out the titles on our Web site to see if the book you have written would fit with our titles. We receive close to 1500 submissions per year and publish 60-70 titles a year (only 4-8 are poetry or fiction). At this time, we publish only Canadian-authored poetry and fiction. For non-fiction (literary and commercial) we accept proposals from anywhere. If you live outside of Canada, please include an international reply coupon instead of stamps, since we cant use foreign postage in Canada. If you would like your entire submission returned rather just a single-paged letter of response (if things dont go your way), include sufficient postage. Otherwise we will recycle the proposal. If we like what we see, well ask for more.
Response time? Between two weeks and four months, usually. (We hope for the former and apologize for the latter.)
