Amira143 said: Chrysanthemum is a story about a young mouse whose parents named her after the most perfect flower, a Chrysanthemum. Growing up, she loved her name very much until the first day of school when some of her classmates giggle upon hearing her name. Everyday they continue to tease her about how her name is so long it hardly fits on her nametag. Everyday her parents assure her how beautiful and perfect her name is and she feels slightly better until the next school day. However, things take a turn for the better when the students’ favorite music teacher reveals that her name is Delphinium and she too is named after a flower. Suddenly all of the other students are jealous of her, and Chrysanthemum beams with pride. The pen and watercolor illustrations depicted throughout the book are framed within boxes. Some of the pages just have one big box featuring the illustration, while others have three or even more boxes per page. Within each box a different illustration is portrayed. The adjectives that Henkes uses in his story to describe Chrysanthemum’s feelings (she wilted, she beamed and bloomed) all have undertones of those related to flowers. This is an excellent book that children with different or unique names will find relatable.
