Amira143 said: This heartwarming story tells the tale of a boy and his friendship with a tree. At the beginning of the story the boy is very young and he loves the tree very much. He plays in her leaves, climbs on her trunk and eats her apples and this makes her very happy. As time goes by the boy becomes a teenager and spends less and less time playing with his old friend, the tree. One day he comes to see her, not because he wants to play, but because he needs money. She gives him all of her apples so that he can sell them and make money. As time continues to pass, he makes several visits to the tree when he needs something else from her. By the end of Silverstein’s book, she is nothing but a stump, as everything else has been taken by the “boy” over the course of his life. In the very end, she is a place for him to rest his weary, old body and that makes her very happy. One cannot help but sense the sadness that resonates throughout this story and is a must read for all children, as it teaches the very important lesson of gratitude and appreciation. The simple illustrations are just black pen on white paper, and for the most part there are only a few words on each page. This actually creates a more dramatic affect, as each word and illustration is thoughtfully on display. The Giving Tree can inspire countless activities for students including creating lists of what they are thankful for, and what gifts they would most like to give. These lists can then be hung on the class “giving tree.”
