It reminds me of the many stories my mother told me about when she was young and living a similar life in Kentucky. Melva gives each character such detail that you can see them in your mind like old photographs. My mother told me stories of all the hard work she and her many siblings had to do with little in return and how when he father died, she had to go out to the front porch in the middle of the night and reach up to a bell to ring it telling other folks there was an emergency at their home. This story of Maggie brings all my mothers stories to the surface again, helping me to understand the mindset of a young child growing up in that era. Reading this book also helps me understand why my mother and her siblings look so unhappy and unlike the pictures of children in modern day pictures. They were exhausted! The people of that era should be applauded for their perseverance and determination to survive even the worst of times. If I could give this book more than five stars I would because it's THAT good! Melva Henderson is an amazing story teller and I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in the trilogy! :)
