The author first draws you in with making references and strong ties to gothic classics (Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll /Mr. Hyde) but then tries to do too much that the story line gets lost and never fully developed. It would have been great if, Kady Cross just slowed down a bit and just told the story from one perspective, Finley’s. This way could have left many things unanswered which could then be slowly introduced in the next book. Cross got so caught up in Plato’s Aether theory (Spirit Realm) that the dual nature of Finley never fully gets explored and the possible love triangle just fizzles out. I did enjoy the twist of including sci-fi into this fantasy and thought the use of an unknown organism to explain the Industrial Revolution and support Darwin’s theory of Evolution unique. This was a good first attempt to start a series that hopefully will evolve.
