Grandpa accidentally sends a pancake flying across the room which soon lands upon Henry’s head! This incident reminds Grandpa of a story and when he tucks the children in to bed later that night he shares it with them. Readers are immediately transported to a little town called Chewandswallow where different food rains from the sky three times a day. The townspeople carry plates and bowls and silverware with them at all times, in order to catch the varying food that falls from the sky. The detailed pen & ink watercolor illustrations work hand in hand with the text to showcase hamburgers, hotdogs, soup, pie and pancakes landing in trees and on cars while the townspeople jump to catch and enjoy their latest meal. The cartoon illustrations start out black and white and turn to color for Grandpa’s story. At the end of the book the illustrations go back to black and white as the reader re-enters the children’s bedroom. This truly captivating story would be perfect for a story time and could inspire several food related crafts as well as spark conversation.
