I'm slightly obsessed with the Albert Khan Archives. I'd heard about it, but was pretty much in the dark until last year when PBS ran the BBC documentary The Wonderful World of Albert Khan. You can actually see part of it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUR61F1dOms I imediately purchased the companion book and it's been a source of inspiration ever since.
For instance, my walrus here started with a conversation with my agent. For some reason we were talking about walruses... serious, important publishing stuff, ya know... which got me thinking how I'd never actually drawn a walrus before and it would probably be a fun thing to do. So I started sketching. At first all the little guys were very realistic and how should I say.. boring. But as I sketched the character of the animals started to come out.. and then I remembered the Khan images of the Maharajah of Kapurthala, who as it turns out, looked exactly like a walrus. See scan below:
So I combined the two ideas and now I have a most worthy walrus, and a summer promo.

The other day, I glanced at my Pandora, and it hit me that the singer Jason Derulo was actually Jay Sean Derulo. (If you don’t know who I’m talking about, good for you.) I was amazed – how had I not realized this before?! Because it’s not true. They’re actually two different people, but at least in looking it up, I stumbled upon this gem of a mash-up. [YouTube]

Here's an old sketch of a walrus that was going to go on the rear jacket flap of SUPERHEROES. Unfortunately for this large aquatic mammal, the duck just seemed a little more "Wacky."
I was requested to draw a hidden picture for Highlights with a polar bear theme. For whatever reason I decided to go with a more realistic feel. Given the threatening overtones of this sketch I really wasn't sure if it would get approved but to my surprise they approved of the sketch and I went to a finish. It's now 3 years later and I'm still not sure if this ever went to print, perhaps the editors didn't like it after all!
Unfortunately I never scanned in the finished line art to this one so what you're seeing is the finished sketch.
You can get a set of Highlights Hidden Picture books right here.
Color in this Walrus coloring page and send it to me at mail@crodillustration as a jpeg or pdf and I'll post it on my blog! Happy Coloring!! For more Coloring pages click here.
Very interesting article at SF Signal. They asked a group of genre artists how digital mediums are changing the face of art. Lots of varied opinion.
This walrus painting is one of a bunch of tiny watercolour sketches I'm doing on breaks so I can play with them in photoshop. I finally received a photoshop textbook and that's helping too.
I'm reading a great book right now, in fact it's amazing. It's called Baltimore, Or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier And The Vampire by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. I think the title sells it quite well. It's a horror story that combines the Hans Christian Andersen story The steadfast tin Soldier, World War One and Vampires. And it's illustrated. Very cool.
