By 1996 it had become obvious that, whilst the general reading public were happy to buy our Classics, they were not selling into the academic market due to their lack of critical content. Within two months we had appointed a general editor, whose remit was to oversee the addition of contemporary notes and introductions to all of the most important of our classics, and in particular to those which were studied at the various schools, colleges and universities in the UK. Now nearly ten years later we have almost completed the task.
