I enjoy writing, but I especially enjoy working with teachers and students on projects that help them find ways of protecting and restoring natural communities.

Basic truth, I live to fish. So, it is with great pleasure that I am actually invited to work in schools where I take kids out onto ponds, into streams, and along the ocean shore to catch fish. We net and observe, then carefully return our catch after learning something about creatures in the water world.

Many of my books spring from adventures with kids or with my family. We spend much time on the beach, fishing in Wyoming or Montana, and snorkeling in Hawai'i - a special place for me that inspires many of my new books.

As a writer and artist, I get to observe the diversity of school situations in our country. It is sad to see so many elementary kids with no art teachers, art rooms, or supplies at hand to create projects. Kids at this age learn so much through art and when they are denied the creative juice, they suffer. We all suffer. That's is the impetus behind my newest project, 500 BRUSHES.

500 BRUSHES is a project aimed at bringing art supplies to schools with no art education, a condition especially common in my home state. It is also an effort to help teachers create art rooms and spaces in their buildings. It is also a way all of us can donate supplies to kids in need and want or paint brushes, paint, and other supplies. Contact me for more details.
