I've published four adult novels, a memoir, and a book of non fiction, but it's the children's book Raised By The Wind, with Pooka Longley's illustrations giving it wings, that is my simplest and clearest writing. It was the first time I'd ever collaborated on books, so when this magic happened I was stunned.
My brothers and I grew up in Santa Fe and knew Pooka from way back then, so this pairing up so many years later seems almost fated.
My daughter Cristina was the inspiration for the story; she told me at age 6 that she'd decided she wanted to be raised by giraffes.
