I have written many history textbooks and information books for young people. These are used in schools in several countries. I work for different publishers but mostly for Oxford University Press.

I am passionate about history and have been teaching since I qualified in 1974 from Westminster College, Oxford. I also have an MA from Kent State University, Ohio, in Political Science. For 28 years I have taught at Hall Mead School, Upminster, on the edge of London, but I am now on the verge of retirement.

I am active in politics and I serve as a Magistrate. I have loads of other interests including animal welfare, the history of airships and 1950s and 1960s pop and rock 'n' roll music and I'm an Elvis fan!

As politician and author I have appeared on countless radio and TV programmes.
