I'm sure that I wanted more than anything to be a locomotive engineer once upon a time, but school got in the way, and reality pushed my dream into a siding. Over the next few years of childhood and early teens, that dream would be joined by a bunch of others. Parked. Wheels rusting onto the tracks. Forgotten.......

After 25 years of interesting work in a totally unrelated field, discovering the world and learning about people, a short period of unemployment became longer than expected.

Would I send out (another) application? Would the response be the same?

Instead, I went for a walk down the siding. Memories came back. A museum of beautiful exhibits.

"Does this one still work?" I would ask. Bumping the fender, it felt solid. More solid than most of the things I had done as a paid employee on 'the main line'.

So I climbed on board a red shiny dream, trimmed with brass. It felt familiar, I had been here before. Memories came back, not only of the dream, but of the age of dreams.

Hesitating for a few moments only made it more exciting.

Let's go, I said.
