Born and raised in Santa Ana, California--the middle son of two elementary school teachers and the great-great-grandson of the town's first doctor. Earned his A.B. in English with Distinction from Stanford University, his M.F.A. from the Writers' Workshop of the University of Iowa, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Author of: numerous poems, book reviews, reference work entries, literary critical and creative essays, and _Each Thing We Know Is Changed Because We Know It, and Other Poems_ (Boise: Ahsahta Press of Boise State University, 1994, 1996, 2006). Poems anthologized in _The Poetry Cure_, _California Poetry: from the Gold Rush to the Present_, _Unfolding Beauty: Celebrating California's Landscapes_, and elsewhere. Revision editor of 2nd Viking Critical edition of _The Grapes of Wrath: Text and Criticism_ (New York: Viking-Penguin, 1997), co-editor of _Beyond Boundaries: Rereading John Steinbeck_ (Tuscaloosa: U Alabama Press, 2002), editor of _The Essential Mary Austin_ (Berkeley: Heyday Books, 2006). Founding member of the editorial boards of: _Steinbeck Newsletter_, _Steinbeck Studies_ and _Steinbeck Review_. Recipient of the Burkhardt Award as the Outstanding Steinbeck Scholar of 2005. Former adjunct faculty member at University of Iowa, Coe College, UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, California State University--Los Angeles, UCLA Extension, UC Santa Cruz Extension, Notre Dame de Namur University, and Santa Clara University.
