Carherine (Kate) Garchinsky is an independent visual arts specialist with a BFA in Illustration from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She currently paints and writes in Denver, Colorado.

Kate recently received recognition for her first picture book manuscript, "Time To Fly," via honorable mention from the SCBWI for the 2009 Barbara Karlin Works-In-Progress Grant. The story is a non-fiction but poetic retelling of Kate's personal observations of a family of baby herons' first flying lessons.

Kate is a member of the (no name) Art Group, a non-profit artists' collective based in Philadelphia, and has been an author / illustrator member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators since 1999, providing volunteer design services for local chapters in Pennsylvania and Colorado. She is also a contributing artist to "Rough-Writers Ink," a bi-annual publication, and a drawing and illustration teacher at a local adult education center. Visit her site at penguinart.com
