Karen Autio is the author of a trilogy of Canadian historical novels for young readers and a west coast sea otter chapter book called Kah-Lan the Adventurous Sea Otter (Sono Nis Press, 2015), illustrated by Sheena Lott. Book 1 in her trilogy is Second Watch (Sono Nis Press, 2005). This novel was inspired by the tale of a silver spoon from her Finnish grandmother and the wreck of the Canadian Pacific steamship Empress of Ireland in 1914. Book 2: Saara’s Passage (Sono Nis Press, 2008), was inspired by the mystery surrounding her Finnish grandmother’s battle with tuberculosis, and the letters she wrote to her infant daughter while quarantined with TB. Both books have been enthusiastically received by children, adults, teachers, parents, and reviewers and both titles have been shortlisted for the BC Chocolate Lily Award. Book 3: Sabotage (Sono Nis Press, 2013) is told by both Saara and her brother John and takes us into a real-life world of espionage, sabotage, and paranoia in Canada in 1915.
