About Jillian
Hi, I'm Jillian Lund. I am an author and illustrator of children's books as well as being a multi-media artist working on public spaces and private commissions.
As an author/illustrator, I am best known for my Frank the coyote books: WAY OUT WEST LIVES A COYOTE NAMED FRANK ©1993 and TWO COOL COYOTES©1999. Both of these books are published by Dutton Children's books, NY, NY. Both of these books have been recognized with awards including, for Way Out West... the Colorado Book Award and for Two Cool Coyotes... the Missouri Building Block Award.
I have also been published by the RGU Group out of Tempe, AZ. That book is called HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A JACKALOPE? This publisher also created a super-cute plush jackalope to accompany the book.
In tandem with my children's book work I have spent the past 13 years as a public speaker, typically grades K-5, as well as at conferences speaking with educators. I have highly visual, fun workshops and lectures on the subject of writing for children, designing and illustrating books and being a working artist.
I grew up in Kailua, on Oahu, in Hawaii but spent the past 28 years mostly in Colorado, where I developed my style of painting and explored many other techniques, mentoring and being mentored by many fantastic artists.
Perhaps the most unique project I have been involved was for the City of Manitou Springs, in Colorado (my home for four years). The project has been named the MANIZOO. It is a 750 sq. ft. sandbox covered entirely by hand built ceramic tile. It features a circular entry, an undulating wall to climb on and a "puzzle poem" that explains the seek-and-find elements of the overall design. The outside features Colorado native forest/prairie animals and the inside river and stream critters.
I worked with two other artists on this project: Harriet Lee and Paul Dahlsten as well as many volunteers. We even had a community participation/fund raising element in which we designed and cut out ceramic fish, butterflies and turtles that families could put their own special mark, and names on.
This project was recognized with the STARBURST AWARD, for most creative use of lottery funds as well as the PARTNERSHIP FOR COMMUNITY DESIGN AWARD, awarded for excellence in public art works in the Pike's Peak region.
My final commission before moving back to the islands two years ago was for MERCY GILBERT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL in Gilbert, AZ. Featuring art from my three western styled books. The hallways are filled with giclee's of art from the books. I also created a 4-paneled 42" high by 20' mural featuring 21 coyotes (to find) and numerous animals from the desert southwest. As a complimentary piece I created a 36" high sculpture of desert animals stacked on top of each other for a fun, whimsical piece called "Balancing Act". (shown in picture gallery below)
After so many years in my beautiful Colorado, I chose to move home to my beautiful Hawaii (I know, it's tough). I am eagerly seeking a way into this fertile art community where I first began my own art explorations so many years ago.
Please feel free to contact me and tell me what you do, or if you have any questions I will try to have some kind of answer.
Aloha, Jillian
