About The Author
Drexel Diron Deal, was born in the picturous and beautiful island of Nassau in The Bahamas on July 3rd 1975, to parents Fred Deal and Angela Johnson. After witnessing his parents violent split up at the age of 5, which almost resulted in the death of his entire family, as a result Drexel’s young life would be change forever. His early childhood education began at William Phipps Primary school, and then on to C. I. Gibson and ending at R. M. Bailey when he was expelled during the 12th grade.
After being kicked out of school at the age of 16, he stumbled into a life of crime and eventually joining the most notorious street gang in the Bahamas at that time, the ‘Rebellion Raiders’. The year he was supposed to have graduated from school, was the year he made prison for the first time and his criminal career began in earnest. While in school he flunked just about all of his classes, yet it was during his second trip to prison did he develop a love for reading books and thus his true education began.
With a flair for being bold and Dearing, Drexel became a go to person for all sorts of violent crimes upon his release from prison. He quickly rise up through the ranks of the gang becoming one of its top generals. However, one day the Rebellions erupted in a deadly internal war, that started with the leader of his gang being shot by Drexel. But some months later the leader would return the favor, by having him gun down in a hail of bullets where Drexel narrowly escaped death.
After vowing to himself never to allow someone he shot to live, Drexel sets his heart on a bloody and deadly revenge plot. However, he has one small problem, all of his weapons were busted by the police and two of his key people were in prison. Thus he fell back on the petty crimes of his youth, and he soon acquired sufficient fire power to rival a police station. However, rather than focusing on getting even, he turn his attention on a brazen deposit arm robbery.
On July 3rd of 1996 he attempted to rob an armored vehicle where he was shot 4 times resulting in the loss of his sight.
On that night he wanted to die, because he thought that death would’ve been an escape from his legal and medical issues.
None-the-less, after giving his life to Jesus Christ he would make a full recovery in health, even though not gaining his sight back. Those insurmountable legal issues that he was concern about, well we would leave that for him to explain in his own unique way. However, he attributes that occasion to finding his way. He says and I quote: I know that one of the greatest things that ever happen to me was the lost of my sight. The lost of which is pale in comparison, to the many things I’ve been able to find.”
His road to full recovery has not been an easy one, yet he was determined to make something out of his life. With the help of an international motivational speaker and author, Dr. D. Paul Riley who basically studied at the feet of Earl Nightingale, he took a special interest in Drexel’s life and became like a father figure. According to Drexel, “Dr. Riley fostered and nurtured a love in me for personal development through self-help books. He encouraged and assisted me, when I decided to reach back by working with young men through the youth program Brothers Against Crime & Killing [BACK]. As a way of preventing what happen to me, from happening to another young man. Through going back to school and spiritual enrichment, I slowly clawed my way back on the right path.
I must admit that there were times I felt like giving up on life and throwing in the towel. But what stop me was the scripture verse found in the book of Ecclesiasts 9: 4 which states: “But anyone who is alive in the world of the living has some hope; a live dog is better off than a dead lion. GNT”
I realized in spite of everything, the fact that I am alive today, was reason enough for me to hope for a better tomorrow. I know deep within my heart, that it is only because of the grace of God, that I am not only alive but well and free today. So how could I put an end to something that God has saved, preserved and kept himself?”
Today Drexel is an author, a motivational speaker, a former Toast Master of the year, and speaker of the year. He’s also the former president of the Disabled Persons’ Organization [DPO], an organization which is geared toward the empowerment of persons with disabilities. In 2004 he spear headed the largest training initiative ever done in The Bahamas, to train some 21 persons with disabilities in 2 phases of computers. In August of 2006 Drexel was recognized as a high achiever, in the College of The Bahamas President’s Scholars Report for his studies in effective writing and Human Resource Management.
He is married, and has ONE child a son age 9. Drexel is a go getter, who loves the thrill of accomplishments that comes about through hard work, persistency and creative effort. He’s a lover of the spoken word, and fills his time listening to his MP3 Bible, as well as listening to other audio books. He loves collecting African Proverbs and many other quotations. He lists one of his favorite African proverb which states:
“What an old man sees sitting down, a young man cannot see standing up.”
One of his greatest joys comes from speaking with young people, and he has address thousands throughout The Bahamas at schools and church youth groups. While Drexel’s story may fascinate and resonate with young people, yet his blindness is the powerful warning message that they all remember most.
