I'm a children's author, and have been publishing for a little over ten years. These early credits were in children's magazines such as Highlights, Ladybug, AppleSeeds, and Spider. I'm proud my first picture book, Christmas Eve Blizzard, was an ASPCA's Henry Bergh Children's Award Finalist.

I write fiction and nonfiction for children. I also write haiku, with my work published in such places as Frogpond, Modern Haiku, and The Thin Curve (Red Moon Press). My AppleSeeds article, "Aha! A Haiku," is about how to write this form.

Currently, I'm putting together a picture book on Chiyo, Japan's most famous woman's haiku poet. I'm also working on a middle grade novel. Being a short writer, this long form is challenging. But my protagonist has ideas of her own, and I find myself drawn back to Clara's story. Actually, she's yanking me with all her might. I'm also working on a chapter book about summer camp. I have several picture book manuscripts circulating.

I was born, grew up, and still live in Connecticut. When I'm not writing, or teaching writing, I'm reading. Some of my favorite authors are Willa Cather, Verlyn Klinkenborg, Wendell Berry, Gary Paulsen, Natalie Babbitt, Lois Lowry, Linda Sue Park, Richard Peck, Kevin Henkes, Sarah Stewart, and Cynthia Rylant. I love Bach, jazz, and Mary Oliver's poems.
