Steve said: Very fun and accessible story for my son when he was finishing 1st grade, reading about at level, if a bit reluctantly. If your reader has outgrown Marvin Redpost, try the Magic Treehouse series.

Sounds like quite a challenge --- writing for the subject matter & interest of an 8th grader on a basic reading level.
