I am currently loking for an agent for my first book. I received an MFA in Creative Writing with a focus in fiction from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky in November 2008. I was honored to have worked with Silas House, Joyce McDonald, Crystal Wilkinson, Rachel Harper, Robin Lippincott and KL Cook.I am a member of SCBWI and am a middle school teacher of Language Arts and Advanced Writing.I am a proud Alabamian, and honored to be apart of such a literary state where finding the next story is as simple as looking in your own backyard.I enjoy and respect the writings of Harper Lee, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor and Eudora Welty, in addition to the more contemporary Southern authors like Silas House, Lee Smith, Sue Monk Kidd, Daniel Wallace, Brad Watson and Ron Rash. I also love my YA fiction, and greatly look up to SE Hinton, Kate DiCamillo, Avi, Kimberly Willis Holt, Joyce McDonald, Robert Cormier, Cornelia Funke, Neil Gaiman, Libba Bray, and Lois Lowery to just name a few.I am currently looking for an agent for my first work, The Empty Sky, a YA novel with a fourteen-year-old narrator named Jimmy Freeman. Set in my native Alabama in 1974, Jimmy struggles with his father's absence as he sets out to solve the mystery behind Melvin Mooney the Loony, a young, umkempt man who rides around his small town of Dephi on a rusted bike collecting bottles.I write because I cannot escape it. It is like breathing. I would die if I do not do it. And I write to honor those who have not had the wonderful opportunities I have, those other storytellers in my family, those who told their stories from porch swings and cotton fields, those who made storytelling apart of their culture. As for me, my stories are a part of my life, my characters as close as friends.
