Elaine Joyal, Ph.D., is a botanist who has spent 30 years studying plants in the Western USA and Latin America. Her work has included studies of threatened and endangered plant species, vegetation studies and traditional ecological knowledge. Along the way she’s developed a fondness for palms and plants used in basketry. She has been employed by The New York Botanical Gardens, The Nature Conservancy Headquarters, and by Jones & Stokes (Sacramento). She has taught subjects ranging from botany to human ecology. In addition to publishing in peer-reviewed journals, she has co-authored a children’s book (Ancient Harvest) and is working on a non-majors botany textbook.

Dr. Joyal received her Ph.D. from Arizona State University, her M.S. from Oregon State University, and her B.A. from Antioch College. She is the recipient of awards from several professional societies (Society of Ethnobiology, Society for Conservation Biology, Association of Tropical Biology) as well as the Wildflower Recovery Award (American Horticultural Society). Her work has been funded by grants from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, the American Philosophical Society, the Arizona Humanities Council, the National Science Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and the American Association of University Women.
