About George
Greetings!
Thanks for your time and consideration. I appreciate your interest.
My experience in art includes over 30 years in a graphics art department within the communications industry.
Outside of work I’ve combined art with a life-long interest in history and geography. At an early age I developed a fascination with the Civil War that grew into a passion for the subject. For years I’ve had the privilege to create maps for some leading historians and authors, including - Stephen Sears, Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr., Robert K. Krick, Gary Gallagher, Peter Cozzens, Gordon Rhea, A. Wilson Greene, Albert Castel, Bryce Suderow, Edwin C. Bearss and many others whose books are published by top commercial and university presses.
Ralph Peters award winning series of Civil War novels include my maps.
Oliver North's novel, THE RIFLEMAN will include 10 of my maps.
From March 2005 through August 2008, my maps appeared in each issue of Civil War Times Magazine. NORTH&SOUTH magazine, and America's Civil War magazine have also been illustrated with my maps.
The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum - the oldest history museum in the state - has commissioned several maps from me for their exhibits about the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Burning of Columbia.
However, my cartography has not been limited to Civil War topics. American History Magazine (June 2008), and VIETNAM Magazine (April and August issues, 2008) include my maps.
Other books illustrated with my maps include: For the Soul of Mankind: The United States, the Soviet Union, and the Cold War, by Dr. Melvyn Leffler; Combined Arms Warfare in the Twentieth Century, by Jonathan M. House; The Inscriptions of Dodona and a New History of Molossia, by Dr. Elizabeth A. Meyer, and, The Last Safari: An Autobiography, by Basie Maartens. Mussolini's Death March, by Nuto Revelli, Ed. John Penuel.
I’ve also contributed maps to many publications of the Eastern National Park and Monument Association, and several state and local organizations.
As an artist I’ve had the pleasure to create the original logo used by the APCWS, later adapted for the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) – the nation’s largest organization dedicated to saving at-risk Civil War sites.
In addition I have created artwork for exhibits at several battlefields, including an 8’ x 4’ outdoor mural exhibited between 1984 and 2004 at Fredericksburg NMP, Virginia. My miniature sculptures appear in many private collections.
As a freelance writer I have authored/ co-authored/edited seven books and scores of magazine articles and book reviews for a variety of history publications, including the
James E. Taylor Sketchbook (reviewed in the Washington Post). The January 2019 issue of America's Civil War Magazine includes my latest article, about the fight before Christmas at Middleburg, Tennessee.
Between 1989 and 1992 I served as co-editor of BLUE&GRAY Magazine.
A book I co-edited - Lone Star Confederate: A Gallant and Good Soldier of the Fifth Texas Infantry, published by Texas A&M University Press, won the 2003 SCV Book Award for the best book on Texas and/or Texans in the Confederacy. This book also includes a dozen of my maps.
Throughout 2009 I wrote a series of Lincoln-related book reviews for issues of Civil War Times and America's Civil War magazines.
In addition, I’ve created and self-published an ongoing series of illustrated battlefield map guide booklets that have been sold at Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Pea Ridge, and Little Bighorn battlefield parks.
I'm grateful for your consideration, and will be happy to answer any other questions, and provide samples.
Sincerely,
George
