Publisher Information
Birlinn Publishers
Birlinn Ltd publishes a wide range of books of Scottish interest under a number of different imprints, including books on history, archaeology, customs and traditions, military and adventure, travel and folklore. Our Polygon imprint publishes modern and classic Scottish poetry and fiction, including Alexander McCall Smith. The company takes its name from the birlinn, or West Highland galley. It is derived from the norse word byrdingr, which was a small cargo-ship built with the lines of a longship. This was the vessel used for trade, exploration and invasion throughout the medieval period. We use the image of the birlinn as our logo because it's a strong symbol of our past, of the powerful sea-faring nation we were once, and of the many people who have left these shores to settle throughout the world. Whatever your connection to Scotland, we hope you enjoy our selection and we look forward to hearing from you.
